Lines cut

 

First dance – after the swinging around movement, find a spot to stop and walk out before the chief begins.

 

WARREN	Well, here’s the Chief. super Chief
WILLIAMS	The
WARREN	Ol’ deef and dumb.  Don’t you know better?
WILLIAMS	Don’t you know keep to your room til that bell ring?  He scared like a baby	Bromden tries to slide away.

 

WARREN	Sweet thing, you want some help?
FLINN	I don’t need any.  Thank you.

 

BILLY

He’s duh…deaf and duh…dumb

?  Oh, give me the cards.

 

MCMURPHY,laughing	I may just have to pull her plug.	He continues dealing.She opens the window again.
RATCHED Step on Mac’s lines.	Group meeting.  Time for group meeting.	Cue 8 bell after plug

 

BILLY disregarding Scanlon

I’m such a duh-disappointment to her, but she won’t admit it.  She won’t suh-see me like I am. And pretty soon, I want to kuh…kill myself.  So I try. Desperate, he looks as though he wants to cry.

 

 

RATCHED	McMurphy, Randel Patrick. Committed by the state for diagnosis and possible treatment. Thirty-five years old.  Never married.  Distinguished service cross for leading an escape from a Communist prison camp. McMurphy is obviously embarrassed by this heroism.  A dishonorable discharge for insubordination, followed by a history of drunkenness, assault and battery, repeated gambling….
RATCHED	Our newest admission.
SPIVEY	You’ve no previous history? Any time spent in other institutions?
MCMURPHY	No.  This is my first trip.  But I am crazy, Doc.   Here, let me show you…“Repeated outbreaks of passion that suggest the possible diagnosis of psychopath.”
SPIVEY	I’m interested in this statement:” Don’t overlook the possibility that this man might be feigning psychosis to escape the drudgery of the work farm.” Well, Mr. McMurphy, What about that?
MCMURPHY with a maniacal grin:	Do I look like a sane man?  He laughs at himself with enjoyment.
RATCHED	Perhaps, Doctor, you should advise Mr. McMurphy on the protocol of these meetings.
SPIVEY	Patients must remain seated.  We operate on the principle of the Therapeutic community; this ward is a democratic society in miniature working to restore patients to the outside.  The important thing is not to let anything fester inside you.  Talk. Discuss. Confess. Write it down in the log for all to see.  Do you know what this procedure is called?

 

RATCHED	Mr. Harding stated that he was uneasy when walking with his wife because other men stared at her ample bosom. He further said quote.
HARDING flatly	She gives them reason to stare, unquote.
RATCHED	Yes. He has also been heard to say that he may give her reason to seek attention elsewhere.  What reason, Dale?
HARDING	Well, I can’t say that I have been notably ardent…
RATCHED	Do you mean inadequate?
CHESWICK	Maybe she’s just too hot for him.
BILLY out of malice from his previous hurt	I buh bet he’s afraid of her.
HARDING	I’m not afraid.
MARTINI, grinning	Okay, scared.
HARDING, wringing his hands	Not afraid!  PAUSE It might be fair to say…intimidated.
HARDING	I see Mr. Harding has also stated that his wife’s ample bosom gives him a feeling of inferiority.
SCANLON	So why does he marry a dame with such big knockers to begin with?
HARDING	I wanted a womanly woman. One who would not compete, but who might help me to….
RATCHED, referring to notes	She has commented, Dale, that she finds you less than masculine.
MARTINI	How bout it, Harding”
	McMurphy is standing apart as an outsider watching all this with growing incredulity.
RATCHED	To counteract certain tendencies within yourself? Would you say part of the problem is that she finds you less than masculine? Without waiting for an answer.  You chose a woman who was quite obviously your inferior.  Don’t you find significance in that?
HARDING, visibly embarrassed	Yes, of course, but I theorized……. It seemed to me…… Why… Why do I always cry? Harding begins to rock back and forth, weeping.

 

HARDING His talk speeds up, his hands dance and flutter; a wild puppet doing a high strung dance.

Miss Ratched is a veritable angel of mercy… and … why, she has no life, nothing but her work and everybody knows it.  Harding picks up a yellow ascot, playing with it and thinking at the same time.  McMurphy looks at him levelly. Our Miss Ratched is the kindest, sweetest, most benevolent woman that I… that I…. He has to sit on his hands. That I have…. He begins to laugh, then he is crying. I hate her…I hate her! He says it with more conviction the second time and he ties the ascot around his throat. Bromden moves away from the group USR. He moves obtrusively DSR by the window

 

RATCHED	Then, what was the matter? PAUSE  What was the matter, Billy?
BILLY	I was in luh…luh…love with her.

 

SPIVEY

I find Mr. McMurphy quite lucid, quite in touch and since he has exhibited no tendencies toward violence, I must conclude that electro-shock therapy is not indicated.

 

RATCHED

As I recall you refused to eat for three days until we allowed you to turn the set on at 6 instead of 6:30.

 

 

 

MCMURPHY

Are you bulling me? No answer, but the men shift uneasily.   Billy, you must be committed? Billy shakes his head. Then why?  You’re just a young kid. They look down at the floor. Why do you stay?  Ain’t you got any guts?

 

MCMURPHY

Planning to use them, Ma’am.  Plannin to scrub them urinals so clean we’re gona have to wear sunglasses every time we pee….

 

MCMURPHY

Yeah, when a town woman marries an Indian, that’s marryin beneath her, ain’t it?  And your papa had to take her name?

 

FLINN		Council meeting.  Patients’ council meeting.
SCANLON	A special meeting of the patients’ council.
RATCHED		Boys, I have given a great deal of thought to what I am about to say.  I believe there should be some form of punishment for your unspeakable behavior yesterday.
RATCHED		Most of you are here because you could not adjust to the outside world.  You broke the rules of society.  You wanted to be punished… needed it… but the punishment did not come. I realize it is difficult to enforce discipline in these surroundings.  However, we have decided to take away certain privileges.  First, for thirty days, there will be no television.

 

RATCHED

No, Mr. Bromden was thought to be catatonic.We assumed that we could not communicate, so we gave up.  However, I have been disappointed to learn that he would conceal it from us.  Therefore, his first contribution to group therapy will be an apology.

 

 

Ratched		he's in the recovery room and will be back shortly. This gentleman, is a record of Mr. mcMurphy's gains in the short time  since he has been here on the ward. How much did you lose? Billy? Mr. Harding?
SPIVEY, shaking his head	not warranted except in cases of uncontrollable violence.  Shall we say there was a certain provocation in the last incident?  I do not approve surgical procedure in the absence of recurrent violence. .

 

HARDING

I guess she means a lobotomy which is a castration of the brain.  Harding points to Ruckly. They say he used to be a real rough character.

 

MCMURPHY

Don’t worry, Boys, them windows will be open tonight.  So I can sashay right on out.  We make it a goin away party, huh.

 

MCMURPHY

Well, let’s let her in.

 

SANDRA

This place is dangerous!

CUE 25 Filler  NO MUSIC

 

RATCHED, changing tactics

Billy, have you thought how your poor mother is going to take this?  You know what this is going to do to her.  You know, don’t you?

 

 

BROMDEN

Papa, They got to me again. They’re giving orders.  Go right.  Go left.  Do this.  Do that.  Where can I run?   Papa, there’s no place to hide no more.

 

HARDING, wearily	A loony told me McMurphy had sprouted wings and was last seen soaring in lazy circles overhead.
MARTINI, amazed	Honest?

 

CHESWICK		and that time that little nurse dropped a pill down the front of her uniform, and Mac tries to get it out, she hollers
SCANLON		Don’t touch me. I’m Catholic. They laugh harder as Harding enters from the dormitory.
BILLY as Harding unlocks the window	Look, McMuh….Muh….Mac, wait.
MCMURPHY	Don’t you mama Murphy me, Billy Boy.  It’s too late to back out now.
