Instructions for District & other contests

Two days from contest!   On Wednesday, our rehearsal time is from 4-5:15.  The students will eat lunch here and we will rehearse before we leave. We will leave Shallowater at 2PM.  Kids need to wear their shirts tomorrow.  We will have dinner – probably at McDonalds.

On Thursday, we will leave at 9AM. We will go on at approximately 4, but it could be as early as 3:30 or as late as 4:30, so please be there in plenty of time if you are going to watch the competition.  There is no charge for the district contest.  Students need to have dress clothes for the award ceremonies. We would love to have as many fans in the audience as possible.  Our kids will feed off the laughter, sighs, moans.  If you do come, please scatter in the audience and do not sit in one section.  Often a judge will reference that the audience loved the show when he/she hears sounds from all over the auditorium.

Seminole ISD Auditorium

2100 NW Ave. D, Seminole, TX, 79360 (I always get lost.  When you enter Seminole, you will see school crossing signs, turn right.  I look for the football stadium lights and head in that direction.  Avenue D is on the west side of town.  Seminole has two Avenue D’s.  Please call if you get lost. Greg -470-9930 & my cell -470-9930)

Please send a big towel or hand towel with your child tomorrow.  Our kids are wearing a lot of makeup this year and the boys, especially, may want to wash up.  Seminole has showers in their dressing rooms. Our school districts will provide lunch, and we will have dinner Thursday at Savanah’s in Seminole – a Mexican restaurant. Students are not allowed to eat in our dressing rooms, but the hospitality room will be open.  I will bring a box to put the kids’ goody bags in so we can keep them contained in that room.

Area, Regional and state dates are listed after the following schedule.

NOTES

COUCH & GRIFFIS

Everyone

Turn the bench down in the first scene
More reaction to mcmurphys description of a pecking party.  You are all guilty
Good job with the red
Great television scene
Don't make curtains or pylons move ever!
Heard talking backstage after 2nd fight scene
Mcmurphy needs to be more right stage on gurney
Look at the deaf line when Mac first enters.
Lighting cigs for patients was great!
Zap – don’t jump – it’s looking too staged.
Start music earlier & louder so they guys can hear it
Lights were not coordinated with music on second dance.
First fight scene – group must move more CS because there was not enough space to fight.
Two of you broke the fourth wall and looked into the audience.  This is an automatic last place.
More guttural people noises in fight scene.
Lights and music
Lights and music were not coordinated on second dance
Technical people
With the exception of two glitches. The lights and sound were perfect.
Williams
Good job looking mean, but you can be meaner.
Talk to Ratched every chance you can.  Look meaner at the men.   You are the rule follower.
We need to work on fight scene.
Look mean all the time. Give men dirty looks.
Aides
Keep laughing until you are two feet past curtain line.
Ratched
medication is too mean
needs more variance not just yelling. Needs to be a complicated character Blood on Sydney's sleeve
We have to have you move more CS with the breaking all the rules lines. Chief does not have space to move.
I loved the different way you said lines today – you were scary.  Sweet with the underlying bitter undercurrent.
Ruckly
whack em all must be crazy
Several audience people loved the way you moved around left stage.  They said you were the best Ruckly they had seen.  You didn’t try to have the focus on yourself, but were subtly crazy.
Billy
do not touch the pylons and make them shake
run around the ramp and 4 x8, u ran through the wall
Loved the way your character gradually went over the top – it was a progression.
Music
faster after breaking every single one of them
Men
Meaner to billy in therapy scene
Came out too soon for 2nd dance
Standing in straight line after candy leaves.  There were no levels
At times there was no people noises.  REACT to everything.
Spivey
Great job. It was funny seeing you cowed by the nurse.
Don’t try to hug her.  It didn’t work.
Medical personnel
Spivey and Ratched need to converse after meeting in the back.  We need to see her bully him and Spivey wiping forehead, etc.
We need to see the alliance between Williams and Ratched.
Martini & Billy
you need to take off red before u don’t vote with mcmurphy
Martini
Great job smiling – you were great at detecting levels and placement on stage.
Chief
more emotion when u say my poppa was bigger
Diction
The last lines need a little work.  You did exactly what we asked, but it’s not working.  More guttural and louder with next to last line.  More triumphant with last line.  Let’s work on that tomorrow.
You brought more emotion to your character.  Thanks.
Chief and Williams
We need to work on your first fight scene.
Scanlon
Loved your craziness.  You were different from the others.  Keep it up! Great job.
Say the billy baby like a woman would.
Mac
Great job today.  You were personable, charismatic
Sure thing was better.
Be flirtier with your first encounter with Ratched.
Cheswick
Good job being crazy – you were consistent.
But, find another way to be on the floor – we need to see your face.
Loved your chasing Sandra.
Stage lights
Red light on electroshock scene

Mac
frozen in wheelchair on back when they're wheeling u in
Look crazier – eyes rolled up, tongue sticking out stop moving sooner when he suffocates you

Warren
Loved the dirty old man you became with Candy in the room.
Martini
start with toilet paper later, too soon
Harding
too staged in party scene, must look spontaneous
we need to get the hair out of your face – made you look too young.
I loved your looks when Sandra came around you.  Don’t put the potty on your head, though, think what that would do to an ocd person like Harding.
Candy
Good reaction to tramp
The audience LOVED your expressions, especially the tramp.   Be as big when you first see the crazy guys in your first entrance.  Do more vocals.
Sandra
Great timing in your entrance.
Easy girls
Put a bottle in the trash before coming in.
Loved your entrance – you drew the audience’s attention.
Flinn
Great job!  You didn’t overdo it but seemed compassionate.
To do
Bungee cords need to be painted
Dead roses
Vodka bottle

March 13

March 13, 2014
Everyone
Hallelujah!  HOPE IS NEAR!
We are contenders!
I’m going to be nit picky
If anyone wants to go to Seminole on Tuesday, let me know.  We can only take five and Paige and Jonathan are going - so there are three spots left.
Ratched
This was your best – I disliked you.
Enter faster and interrupt the aides.
Interrupt Flinn and walk off before she is finished.
Interrupt defunct line and move more CStage.
We need to see the decision to say Billy Bibbit and his speech problem.
Say may terminate to Spivey.
Neck brace
Use the window more.  Have it closed unless you are speaking to the men.
From Teresa
Please (look out over audience’s heads) Beat -Look at Mac and say the rest of the line – shut the window.
Would anyone Like to begin
Be denied.
First…for 30 days – walk among the men.
Don’t cross arms
After billy’s death, don’t stop – head straight for Mac with determination.  Barrel into Mac.
From Reagan - react to the bell and look at the clock or look at your wristwatch.
We still need to get meetings started on time.
Men
Bench needs to be down.
Commit to being crazy so that Harding’s line will make sense about SILENCE!
Thanks for the people noises
React to the door and entrance.
2nd dance – come in as puppets.
Step on lines in the first therapy session. It DRUG!
Hide the red on stage somewhere so that we can start that scene earlier.
LOONIES, Remember to hide when you leave following bedtime & watch them wheel Mac in.
Pecking party – the therapy session – you are supposed to peck at each other like chickens.
The reaction to Candy’s entrance was too staged.  When you hear her heels walk – perk up.  Everyone is in love with her at first sight. Stop in the middle of putting chairs back. You need to be 90% more infatuated with her essence.
You all are still not reacting to Sandra and Candy enough.
Medical people
Wheel Mac in as Nurse Ratched is speaking to the boys.  You should be coming in as the loonies are exiting.
When the poem starts to go slower, you should be through – too much time in electro shock.
Clean up the area following the party quickly.
Music
Interrupt Harding’s therapeutic silence with the door.
Mac
It’s a sure thing – hit thing and bring it down.
Heya – say it on the way to the table.
Whistle sooner after second dance.  Enter asap.
Talk to Billy about being funny with the muh….
This was your best performance.
Billy
Excellent job trying to get people to notice Mac’s entrance.  You helped create the ensemble so well.
Lights
Light on the guards entering USL when they come through with flashlight.
Lights off the patients during Electro shock.
Overall the lights were great!
Scanlon
Excellent talking to Harding when Ratched attacked Billy.
Harding
Loved you throughout – you stayed focused and you were harding.
Candy
Blow kisses to boys
Your expressions were priceless.  Loved the way  you reacted to tramp.
Flirt more with all the guys in t he party scene.
Good job giggling in.
Stage managers
Make sure the curtain is where the red mark is.
Amy
THANK YOU !
Bromden
The best you have done.  You had such feeling talking about your father.
Loved the end.
Austin
Before the fight scene, loved the way you hit the chief.
Bromden and Harding
Loved the way you held Mac back… make that part of the play.
Sandra
Great job tonight.  You were so much better tonight.  Read the instructions for Sandra on the blog for the party scene. You and Brooke are still in the running for the role.
Good job giggling in.   Throw a beer bottle in the trash can so it will be used.
Martini
Great job – your best tonight too.  You were focused and the smile was great!
Warren
Loved the entrance in the party scene.  You were ill at ease and it made us feel for you.
Flinn
Great job keeping the set together. Loved you peeking out the window and getting Ratched’s attention.
Cheyanne
Great job with the lights.  They are tough to do.
Issac
Amazing job with music.  You are a natural!
Kayla
Laurel
Thanks for keeping everything together!
Let me know how the directions went tonight.  Thanks for your input from Sunday.  When we are doing makeup - remind me of your comment.

I wrote stage directions for scene, then repeated them with dialogue

Party scene

SCENE 8

Sandra and Candy drink and giggle as they try to get in. They laugh about the rain, squeal with the thunder.  The giggling should begin as they step on stage and continue into the scene.

Staging

Warren and Mac exchange money.  Warren starts to drink his whiskey and when the girls come in, he shakes his head and panics. Martini and Cheswick cross to right stage waiting for the girls.  Scanlon takes the sack from Candy & goes to the cabinet to get more drugs out.  Cheswick follows Scanlon. Candy flirts with everyone and walks to “be the center of attention.” She crosses to Billy. All eyes are on her.  Sandra comes in – after Mac swings her around.  She (squeals) and heads to Harding – line.    She knows Harding is not comfortable and runs to (Squeals) Cheswick. Candy flirts with everyone and walks to “be the center of attention.”
BILLY, bashfully
Hello, C..C..C..
All eyes are on her. She crosses to Billy. Candy is dancing to music in her head.
CANDY
Nevermind.

SANDRA
Is this for real?  I mean, are we in an asylum?  To Harding. Tell the truth, are you really nuts?

HARDING
Absolutely, Madam.  We are psychoceramics, the cracked pots of humanity
Sandra knows Harding is not comfortable and runs to (Squeals) Cheswick. She drags Cheswick onto by his scarf DCS. All the guys are watching the girls and making people noises.
