Critiques

Everyone
1.    Cut Dance Scene 2 at table-
2.    Candy’s entrance -Lights on full stage. Williams closes Bromden’s hand around a broom.  The other patients are engaging in jobs of floor polishing, dusting, etc. Ratched enters the station from USL. . Warren comes to the door, and he has a visitor with him, a shapely woman wearing a lot of makeup.  She stands in the doorway smacking her gum, looking at the men who are looking at her.  She is amused, and they have stopped their work.  She walks over to the card table and sits.  Nurse Ratched is still working in her station, oblivious to the visitor in the day room.  McMurphy enters  USL
3.    The shock treatment should be over with by the time the children’s verse is over.
Scanlon
Candy showed up yet?

Warren
– I don’t know nothing about no Candy
Warren puts keys in Mac’s hands – Mac throws them to Harding

Mac
– Open the window, huh?

HARDING
She walks in beauty like the ….

4.
SANDRA
This place is dangerous!

Candy
Come on, Billy.
She takes him back to the room.
Harding
. – Mac, we’re going to miss you.

Mac
So, why don’t you all come along?

Harding
Oh, I’ll be going soon.  But I’ve got to do it in my own way.

Mac
What is it with you guys?
Harding doesn’t answer.
Mac
Hey, what’s happening to the party?
Scanlon puts a record on.
Cue 24 This place is dangerous

They dance cheek to cheek, stopping to look into each other’s eyes and speaking softly.  McMurphy and Sandra and Cheswick go sit on the floor, looking happy and content. Nurse Ratched enters from the corridor and stands frozen in incredulity.  She is there some minutes before anyone becomes aware of her.

Billy and Candy come in and dance
RATCHED
William Bibbit!   Billy, I am so ashamed.
FULL LIGHTS

Aides & Flinn
1.    Be frightened when Ratched says - If you don’t mind, boys.
2.    Group meeting.  Time for group meeting. Move Ratched’s table with the log book and two chairs for group meeting. Activities during first group meeting – Stand on 4 X 4 and glare at McMurphy. The other stand behind Ratched and Flinn.
3.    After the first group meeting, the men count pills and put them in little papers.
4.    After five for the road runner, stack extra chairs & move table with gum under it. .  The patients will carry chairs out to the dance.
5.    When I hollered, you jumped.  I thought you was deaf?  After transition, take the log book, Ratched’s table, & two chairs for the next group therapy meeting.  Fold towels & inventory medicine cabinet during second group meeting.
6.    Candy Scene- After Williams hands Bromden the broom again, he looks at Candy and backs up, tripping over something.  Warren runs and pulls out her chair for her.
7.

Ratched
When saying, Williams, we’ve a new admission today.  Meet him at receiving. Take a note and give it to him.
5 patients
1.    Step on lines after Ratched’s –Behave yourselves, Boys. Let’s have Scanlon not playing cards, but working on the machine in the same area.  When he says – look out there – he is afraid someone will bother his bomb. Cheswick -4 of us.
2.    Be a little quieter so we can hear Harding say – this place is a madhouse….& then bring up the sound again.
3.    Cut second dance at table.
4.    After five for the road runner, the patients will carry chairs out to the dance.
5.    After -When I hollered, you jumped.  I thought you was deaf?  -the transition, enter to group meeting jolly, laughing, talking – upbeat.  Have chairs more open.  Billy joke with Harding.
6.
All Men
1.    Mac’s entrance -He backs into view in a fighting crouch and is pursued by Warren who looks hot, angry, and frustrated. Bromden lifts his head and looks curiously at McMurphy.   McMurphy is suddenly aware that everyone is staring at him, everyone but the chronics.  McMurphy is shaggy with long sideburns.  A devilish grin is plastered across his face.  He is wearing a motorcycle cap, motorcycle jacket, Hawaiian shirt, patched and faded jeans, and boots. He is bright compared to the other residents and health care professionals.  A wide-open extroverted air which registers almost shockingly in this environment.  Now he hooks his thumbs in his belt and starts to laugh.  It rings big and free, and its vibrations jolt the patients open-mouthed.Although the lines are cut, I want you to do this – less running – more avoiding being caught.
2.    On Twenty dollars to your ten.  The acutes swarm to find paper and write IOU’s. Martini grabs color. We can put the colored things on the ward hatrack.
3.    2nd group meeting when Dr. Spivey says he has signed the request. McMurphy nods his head with a “thumbs up” to the doctor.  Embarrassed, Dr. Spivey returns the “thumbs up.” Billy, Scanlon, Cheswick, and Martini all share in this victory in different ways.  Chief Bromden puts his broom up.
4.

ALL MEN
5.    Just warmin up.  This time he throws all his strength into it. He closes his eyes and his lips strain away from his teeth.  His head is thrown back, his whole body shakin with the strain.  Chief Bromden finds himself moving toward McMurphy in a sort of muscular empathy.  MAC The air explodes out of his lungs.  He collapses over the panel and falls on the floor.  For a few minutes, there is no sound but his scraping breath. MAC pulls himself to his feet, crosses and picks up the IOU’s with clawed and shaking hands from Harding.  Proffers them, but no one makes a move, so he throws them on the floor.  He turns and makes his way unsteadily toward the dormitory.

Spivey & Ratched
1.    First group meeting - Spivey enters late and is embarrassed. He gestures to continue. He puts on his glasses and watches as she takes a folder from her bag.
Mac
2.    First group meeting – do something.  This is what was written in the script. - Turns his cap sideways and laughs uproariously at his joke. You could mess your hair up crazily.  You could mimic a cartoon character with your line – Do I look like a sane man? He is rubbing it in that he is not really insane.
3.    Oh, yeah, yeah….I think I’m beginning to ketch on. Realizing what he has to do to stay out of the work farm.
4.    Who’s willin to lay five bucks?  He pauses and holds up all of their IOU’s.  Here’s all your IOU’s from blackjack.  Double or nothing! He puts IOU’s out for Harding to hold.
5.
Ratched & Aides & all men
1.    Close it until discipline has improved.
2.    Dr. Spivey obediently rises and makes his departure.  Ratched gathers up her paraphernalia. The aides restore the log book to the podium & return the podium. Ratched and Spivey converse before he leaves.   Bromden moves closer to DCS. There is silence among the men, a subtle sense of shame at once again having betrayed one of their members.  Harding remains seated.  His cheeks are knotted and he hums a shapeless tune.  McMurphy pulls up a chair and straddles it, facing him.

Bromden
1.    New admission, Papa, now they gotta fix him with controls.  They got wires runnin to each man and units planted in our heads.  There’s magnets in the floor so we can’t walk no way but what they want.  And every time they throw a switch, it turns us on or off. (He listens, then continues).  They got factories like this, for fixin up mistakes they made outside.  (He listens for a moment.) They got to me way back ago.  The way they got to you.
2.    After I tried…I tried….Chief Bromden follows a step or two, his arms reaching out.
1.
Scanlon
Your mother has spoken to me about this girl. (Scanlon takes off his color).  Apparently she was quite a bit beneath you.

Martini
When Billy is beginning to grow upset, twisting his shirt-2nd group meeting. Martini takes off his color.
Bromden
When Billy is beginning to grow upset, twisting his shirt-2nd group meeting.Pick the broom back up.
Cheswick
Harding
Mac
CHESWICK
You’ve got her on the ropes!
HARDING
All you need is a knockout punch!

Mac
Bromden
After “How can anybody?” Bromden exits into the dorm.  McMurphy is motionless a moment, then follows.

All Men
Ratched

Flinn helps bring in Bromden & Mac
BEFORE HERE COME THE CHAMPS
Ratched: May I, Doctor?  We have just come from the treasurer's office. It concerns  Randle Patrick McMurphy.
Scanlon- yeah where you got im?
Nurse R- no he's in the recovery room and will be back shortly. This gentleman, is a record of Mr. McMurphy's gains in the short time he has been here on the ward. How much did you lose? Billy? Mr. Harding?
Harding- Miss Ratched... He never made any pretense about his motives.
Scanlon- said he was out to take us and by Jupiter he has done it!
Cheswick- Mac!
The aides, Flinn, Ratched & Spivey are as surprised as the patients by Mac and Bromden’s shenanigans.
